When it comes to children’s mental health and wellbeing it makes sense to adopt a completely open mind, allowing assessment and professional diagnosis to go hand-in-hand with any other supportive measures we might consider. One size does not fit all – and for that reason I have recently started working with a wonderful prescribing pharmacist who is able to offer ADHD medication following diagnosis.
As a clinical psychologist it’s my role to look at the bigger picture before being able to support, guide, diagnose and help with coping strategies and understanding. Seeking help is the start. Then, as we go through the journey to making life more comfortable and manageable, there is sometimes the possibility that medication can help the process. ADHD is complex and having medication as an optional, additional part of my service makes good sense. It means that, by working with other allied heath professionals, we can look at every way of being as supportive as possible. We work cohesively - not sending you to a number of different organisations - to get the right outcome for you.
Medication may be considered for several reasons. It can help with improved focus, reduced impulsivity, calmer feelings and can contribute to children and young people been able to learn new and practical skills.
Sometimes it’s important that we manage any symptoms which may have a neurochemical component. With balanced serotonin or dopamine levels it can make therapy easier in terms of focus and emotional regulation. In other words, medication can make the psychological side of things easier to navigate.
A really important factor is to liaise with your family doctor. This is paramount to a more holistic approach to follow-on care and, potentially, medication can be supplied through a shared care agreement, meaning that it remains as cost-effective as possible.
When medication for additional support is needed, we are working with you, providing an expert approach to the very best care. It’s collaborative and means you are being well looked after from an integrated perspective.
